Aloha Kakou,
Thanks to YOU, our demonstration of e-democracy is booming! As of today we have
134 members, more than the number of delegates in the 1978 ConCon. I would love to gather some kind of metric that compares the volume of discussions we’ve been having online to the ones that occurred in ’78 as I’m sure we will pass that milestone rapidly. If anyone has any ideas as to how to measure online vs. in-person activity, please let me know.
Women interested in running for an elected office or that want to work in a political campaign are invited to attend a “
Ready to Run” conference from 8:30 to 4:30pm Wednesday, May 28 at the Capitol. There will also be a session lead by the League of Women Voters on the pros and cons of a ConCon. Mahalo Nui to member
Carol Philips for posting that event on our site. Any HawaiiConCon.org member can post a ConCon-related event on the Web site and all are welcomed.
And speaking of Women, don’t forget to take part in
Della’s Question of Week that discusses the issue of whether ConCon delegates should be elected in a special election in 2009 or the regular one in 2010 (this assumes voters decide to hold a ConCon).
We had a ton of media coverage over the past week: Ed Case and I were on the Rick Hamada show on Wednesday morning, Della Au Belatti and I were on the
Advertiser Hot Seat on Wednesday afternoon, the Star Bulletin published an
op-ed piece by Ed on Sunday, and the Advertiser published a
column by co-founder Jay Fidell on Sunday as well. Links to these articles and many more are published on the left hand side of the home page and we invite you to read and discuss their merits.
One of the themes you will hear me stressing nearly every week is that it’s vitally important we all get involved in this incredibly important democratic process. HawaiiConCon.org welcomes all points of view on the ConCon and whether you are for or against this upcoming ballot question, it’s important for YOU to put forth YOUR perspectives online. Why? Because if we succeed in demonstrating that a democracy can be conducted online with greater input, equality, transparency, and fairness than ever before, we will have completely changed the rules of a game that many of us feel needs significant improvement.
In a little over one month, this site has grown from its 6 founding members and next to no content to today’s booming social network featuring videos, events, polls, forums and photos, that YOU have created. I firmly believe we all stand together on the brink of an incredible breakthrough in civic conduct and what excites me the most is that YOU are making this happen. This is the first web site of its kind in history that has publicly started a discussion about a Constitutional Convention and WE are creating it together.
So get involved! Get online and debate your fellow members on the issues that you feel strongest about. And if there’s not a discussion already going on in your favorite area, THEN CREATE IT! Invite your friends to join us and develop what might be the largest citizen discussion of government ever created.
Peter
