Yes, I am a YES vote. I was always leaning in that direction but you and others in this group have helped to put things into perspective and solidify my stand. I am still worried that some people might be able to push their own agendas and leave the majority of us hanging but that is a risk I feel we have to take. I am still not clear on who get picked and who chooses what issues to bring forth but I am sure I will get my answers soon enough. For now, lets just keep trying to convince anybody and everybody we can to make an educated choice and pray that ours is the right one.
I have to agree with everything you are saying. My biggest problem has been and still is trying to get my friends to start caring enough to speak up and get registered and most importantly to get out and vote. Politics is a new world for me too. I used to be just like all my friends. Talk big about the Rights of Hawaiians and blame the Ha'ole's for everything. I only recently opened my eyes up to the fact that you need to work for what you want not just for yourself but for everyone you have ever cared about. It doesn't seem right that a blank vote means "no" but we as a people had 10 years to try to fix that. It's not right but thats what we have to deal with so I'm with you in that whoever votes needs to make that commitment and not leave it blank. The radio stations here are blasting out the "vote no to con con" message all day long but I see nothing about any rallies for or against. Right now the politicians want to talk only about themselves. I just wish I paid more attention a lot sooner than this.
I understand what you are saying. It makes perfect sense. But, aren't you worried that we may lose more rights than gain some? My biggest fear is that there may be more non-local registered voters than locals. My kids go to Kealakehe High School in Kona and they tell me that the growing consensus among the Ha'ole students are that Hawai'ians in general cannot be trusted and this message gets delivered to their parents. I'm afraid that the Ha'ole bashing of the past is coming around to bite us in the okole if we are not careful.
